In the past, master shoemakers did not have the machinery and the products that we have today, so it was customary for them to sew shoes by hand. In 1839, however, Charles Goodyear devised a process which was innovative for its time, and which still bears his name. The method consisted of applying a strip of leather called a "welt" laterally to the upper, shaped over a wooden last, and then doing the same process for the sole; and all this using hand-stitching only. This design made it possible to create shoes which are waterproof (because the stitching is not internal), resistant and yet comfortable, given that when the wearer is walking, the stitch points "move", constantly adapting the shoe to the foot. With the passage of time, this technique has been industrialised and sped up using machinery and adhesives that make the product durable and waterproof, but rigid, thereby losing the softness and flexibility that only artisan processing by hand can provide. This is what gives hand-made shoes that added, indisputable value, i.e. returning to artisan traditions which were once requisite, but are now valued and merited. Just a few master craftsmen make shoes in this way: Alessandro Piacentini is one of them. Each shoe contains the ideas, the art, and - why not? - even the mood of the craftsman at that point in time, which is indeed why every pair of shoes is unique and exclusive. The hand-crafted dyeing of the sole and the leather takes time and patience, but a true work of art is the end result. Hand-made shoes are produced only in this way, and combine the typical characteristics of Italian manufacturing: creativity, quality and craftsmanship. A beautiful and fascinating way of working, but also one which is awkward and difficult. It is ideal for customers who want a unique and exclusive product.Brand Details
